Volvo Penta Ground Cable – 889728

The Volvo Penta 889728 is a genuine Volvo Penta OEM ground / earth cable used as diagram-specific electrical bonding hardware on select Volvo Penta sterndrive, steering, trim, and transom shield assemblies. This cable helps maintain electrical continuity between specified metal components and the engine or drive grounding system where the Volvo Penta parts diagram calls for 889728.

Key Features

• Genuine Volvo Penta factory OEM ground cable.
• Volvo Penta part number: 889728.
• Also commonly described as an earth cable or bonding lead.
• Listed weight: 0.014 kg, approximately 0.03 lb.
• Used in select Volvo Penta steering, trim, transom shield, and drive bonding locations where specified by diagram.
• Helps maintain continuity between moving or isolated metal components and the main ground system.
• Important in marine drive assemblies where correct bonding helps reduce electrical continuity issues and corrosion risk.

Application Compatibility

Common application context includes select Volvo Penta assemblies by drive model, serial number, and diagram location, including:

• DPH-A drive and transom shield applications where specified
• Select Duoprop steering system assemblies where specified
• Select hydraulic steering cylinder or trim-related bonding locations where specified
• Select transom shield, steering manifold, and drive linkage areas using ground cable 889728

Use this cable only where the Volvo Penta parts diagram specifically calls for 889728.

Fitment Notice

Confirm fitment by Volvo Penta drive model, drive serial number, transom shield type, steering/trim assembly, terminal location, and cable routing before ordering. Volvo Penta uses different bonding straps, ground leads, cable lengths, and terminal styles across similar drive families, so this part should be matched by diagram location rather than appearance alone.

When This Part Needs Replacement

Replace this ground cable if the original cable is missing, corroded, frayed, broken, oil-soaked, heat-damaged, loose at the terminals, or showing poor electrical continuity. It should also be replaced if the terminal eyelets are cracked, the insulation is damaged, or the cable has been compromised during steering, trim, or transom shield service.

Installation Notes

Install this cable only in the exact Volvo Penta diagram location that calls for 889728. Clean the mounting surfaces before installation so the cable terminals make proper contact with the intended bonding points. Inspect the related screws, washers, brackets, steering cylinder mounts, trim hardware, and nearby wiring while the cable is removed. Route the cable away from hot surfaces, sharp edges, moving linkages, and pinch points.

Parts Desk Insight

Bonding cables are small but important in sterndrive steering and trim assemblies. A loose or corroded ground lead can interrupt continuity between metal components, so the cable, terminals, fasteners, and contact surfaces should be inspected together during drive or transom service.
