Fitment is drive-model and serial-number specific. Confirm 3860232 through the drive-specific upper gear-unit diagram before ordering. Used in selected upper gear-unit and universal-joint assemblies associated with:
Also used in Volvo Penta universal joint assemblies 3860224 and 3860226 where the parts diagram specifies spider 3860232.
Volvo Penta used different U-joint designs and retaining-ring arrangements across visually similar SX and DP drives. Match the spider number through the drive-specific upper gear-unit diagram do not select by appearance or drive family alone. Confirm the sterndrive model, serial number, and installed universal-joint assembly before ordering.
Replace the spider when inspection reveals any of the following:
The spider should also be inspected whenever the drive is removed for bellows, gimbal bearing, or engine-alignment service.
Sterndrive removal and partial disassembly of the universal-joint assembly are required. While access is available, inspect both spiders, the yokes, bearing-cap bores, retaining-ring grooves, U-joint bellows, and gimbal bearing. Replace any distorted retaining rings. Follow the Volvo Penta service manual for assembly, lubrication, and driveline-alignment procedures. After installation, verify the joint pivots smoothly through its full operating range without binding or excessive play.
A failed or leaking U-joint bellows is the most common reason these spiders fail early water gets into the bearing caps and corrosion takes over quickly. If one spider shows rust, stiffness, or looseness, the second spider and the gimbal bearing are almost always worth inspecting at the same time. Replacing related worn components during the same service is much less expensive than a second sterndrive removal a season later.
